Boost for Superfast Broadband

An additional £2,000,000 of funding is in the final stages of bid assessment to enhance superfast coverage for the Connecting Devon and Somerset programme.

In April 2012 we outlined plans to invest £52,660,000 of public funds to improve broadband coverage and speed, stating that we sought to pursue additional sources of funding in order to extend our coverage target by the end of the programme. Since then we have been actively working with Peninsular Enterprise/SERCO who have secured £1m of capital from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). This fund is for provision of superfast broadband (24Mbps or above) to ERDF eligible businesses within the CDS intervention area (shown as white on the below map).

In addition to the above, the CDS programme has submitted a bid to DEFRA’s Rural Community Broadband Fund to further assist areas of Dartmoor and Exmoor who are in the “final 10%”, helping to improve the coverage of superfast broadband in remote upland areas of the two National Parks.

If successful both funds will help enhance our coverage within the identified target intervention areas and deliver additional economic benefits by further improving the level of speed uplift through our contract with BT.
