South West communities receive funding boost to improve mobile connectivity – Connecting Devon and Somerset

The Connecting Devon and Somerset Mobile Boost Scheme has been designed to help small businesses and households who currently have good outdoor but poor indoor mobile coverage.

The programme, which is being funded through the Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership’s (HotSWLEP) Growth Deal, aims to upgrade indoor 4G coverage within businesses and homes in order to improve connectivity and the ability to make voice calls. The programme focuses on small business connections and targets those premises which have no adequate 4G indoor coverage from any operator or only one operator.

The programme allows businesses and households to apply for a voucher of up to £1,200 towards the cost of one of a number of mobile signal booster options from a registered scheme supplier. The value of the voucher will be dependent on the type of technology most suitable for the premises in question. Businesses and residents will be required to make a contribution which, depending on the option chosen, will range from £250 for installation to a monthly fee for a SIM card (averaging circa £30 per month). Your supplier will be able to advise on the most appropriate option.

Businesses and residents in Somerset, Devon, Torbay and Plymouth can apply for the scheme. They will need to complete the form below self-certifying that they cannot receive an adequate indoor 4G mobile signal. Upon application, a voucher code will be emailed to the applicant which can be used with one of the registered scheme suppliers/installers.

It is down to the applicant to research which of the suppliers can install in their area, contacting the supplier directly to redeem the voucher and arrange to have the equipment installed at the premises.

Premises will need good outdoor mobile coverage to benefit from the technology offered through the scheme. If you are unsure whether your premises has good outdoor 4G coverage please speak to your chosen supplier from the supplier list.

Our webpages provide links to a registered supplier list, frequently asked questions and the application form for the scheme.

Which option is right for you?

Do you have poor indoor 4G mobile coverage, meaning that you keep losing the connection?

No, it’s fine

A voucher is not right for you. If you are experiencing poor internet connectivity look at other options on this website or do a wider search on the internet.

Yes, with good outdoor 4G signal for my mobile and with good broadband speeds

A voucher for £800 or £1,200 options using technology called Cel-Fi Go-x or Solo, respectively. In essence, the equipment repeats the outdoor signal into an indoor signal using the specific mobile phone bandwidth allowing you to make a mobile phone call. The installer will ask you for a contribution to the overall equipment and installation costs, which will be around £250. However, once the equipment is installed there are no other ongoing costs.

If you have a good mobile phone that is Wi-Fi calling enabled, you could make a mobile call using your broadband, and would not need a voucher. For this to work, your phone and mobile phone operator must support WiFi calling.

A voucher using the £600 voucher option; this is a 4G router utilising a connection to any one of the UK mobile phone operators to create an indoor WiFi signal. This option allows you to use your phone to make a WiFi call. For this to work, your phone and mobile phone operator must support WiFi calling.
