Phase one was the first stage in Connecting Devon and Somerset’s (CDS) superfast broadband rollout. Now completed, phase one has provided superfast broadband access to around 300,000 residents and businesses across the CDS area. The Government’s 90% target was heavily dependent on BT meeting its obligations under its own commercial programme. The public-private partnership that made up phase one consisted of six local authorities (Somerset, Devon, North Somerset, Torbay, Plymouth and Bath and North East Somerset) and our delivery partner BT. Somerset County Council is the accountable body for the programme.
In all £94 million was spent connecting premises across the counties and this funding has been provided by Local Government, Central Government and BT. Phase one has used fibre optic technology to upgrade the existing infrastructure based on the telephone exchange and cabinet network. In some areas, fibre has been brought in as a whole new network offering ultrafast speeds directly to the home.
Many homes and businesses included in this phase are already able to connect to fibre broadband, so to see if you can upgrade to superfast speeds please use the postcode checker to the right of this screen and visit the How & Why pages to find instructions on how to connect your premises to fibre broadband. For more information on progress in your area please see the Maps section or the Where & When for details on your postcode.
